Background Information
Mr. Tarnoff’s work with the University includes responsibility for the CATT laboratory which provides research related to vision processing systems, data fusion and data visualization. He is an active participant in the areas of distance learning, Intelligent Transportation Systems, and providing support to the Maryland State Highway Administration in connection with their acquisition of the CHART Advanced Traffic Management System. He has been involved with many other projects including:
- project manager for the development of performance measures for transportation operations
- evaluation of traffic signal operations
- development of regional incident management systems
- development of a digital wireless network for the Washington, DC region for communications between law enforcement, EMS and transportation vehicles and agencies
Prior to beginning his work at the University, Mr. Tarnoff was the President and founder of PB Farradyne Inc. While at Farradyne, he was involved with numerous projects dealing with advanced technology including the development of an advanced traffic signal control system, the TRANSMIT system, a toll-tag based traffic surveillance system, participation in the development of the Autoscope video surveillance system, and the Pathfinder advanced traveler information system. Mr. Tarnoff’s previous work experience also includes employment with Alan M. Voorhees and Associates (a division of the Planning Research Corporation), and the Federal Highway Administration.
Mr. Tarnoff received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology (renamed Carnegie Mellon University), and Master of Science from New York University.
